Diversity

About a month ago I went to an event called "Inuit Culture of North Canada". I went to this event not knowing what it was really going to be about, but it sounded fairly interesting. The speaker was a man that grew up in the Inuit culture  and he talked about what his life was like. By the way that he spoke about his home it was clear that he loved it. Many of the things that he talked about surprised me.

One part that I found surprising was that at around the age of seven the Inuit children were taken by government people to be taught in southern Canada. They were not allowed to stay with their families. Another surprise was that now the Inuit people are now embracing technology. Many of the villages have internet and most families have cell phones.

The speaker is now working with many other people to insure that the languages of the people in the north, not only in North America, but also in Europe and Asia, are preserved. It is very important to protect the culture of the past so that it will be there in the future.

Social Media

Throughout social media week I learned many things. One thing that surprised me was that Facebook, Twitter, and other social media cites are good ways to connect with other people that are in the same career field  and to possible employers. I knew that they were good places to connect with people that are my own age and have the same interests, but I did not realize that there are so many more people to connect with. I also learned that I have to make sure that my profile and the things that I post are professional because future employers could look at it.

During the week I participated on Facebook. I chose this because I was already comfortable using it, so I knew that it would make finding groups and people to connect with easier. I believe that social media will greatly help me on my way to becoming a doctor. It will help me connect with people that are going through the same process, as well as future employers.

When I read the articles there was only one that really surprised me. It was Mexico Turns to Twitter and Facebook for Information and Survival. I was truly surprised that social media is one of the only ways that people in Mexico can get reliable news, and even then it is not always correct. In many places the government and media have been corrupted so the only source of news is from the public. From the articles I also learned how beneficial the social media can be when trying to connect and make an impression on employers.

MBTI Reflection

When I got the results of my MBTI I was surprised that my self-assessment type and my indicator type were exactly the same. My results said that I am introverted, sensing, feeling, and judging. The one result that I was not at all surprised about was that I am introverted, that is something that I have always known. For the others I was only slightly or moderately on that side, but I believe that they match up to the way that I am.

Being an ISFJ means that I am practical, realistic, considerate, and responsible. It also means that I focus on the needs of others and take responsibilities seriously and expect others to do the same. I am also respectful of established procedures and authority and I value harmony and cooperation. It also means that I am likely to see facts clearly and accurately and am apt to make decisions based on personal values and concern for others. I am also sympathetic, tactful, and supportive of others. Other people see me as quiet, serious, and conscientious.

I believe that many of these qualities fit the way that I am. I learned that I like things to be controlled and orderly and that I like consistency. I also like to have things planned. Many of these qualities along with the ones mentioned before should greatly benefit me on my way to becoming a doctor. They should also help when I am a doctor because I am patient and persistent and I am respectful and concerned about others.

It was very interesting being able to learn about not only my personality type but those of others. Everyone is different but when I read about all of the personality types I could always picture someone that I know fitting into that specific type. I believe that learning about my personality type should help me be more aware of the things that I do and how they affect other people.
